March 17th E-Learning

Each week I will be posting a short musical lesson for each grade level. Please also check out the Murdock E-Learning post for other activities. Feel free to email me at Patrick.Hydo@cobbk12.org
with any questions or concerns.
Todays activities utilize the Chrome Music Lab experiments. Although they should work with any browser, I found on my iOS devices they work best in Chrome (of course). Each activity was chosen for a specific grade level, but students should be encouraged to explore.
I'd love to see what the kids come up with. Please send screenshots or recordings to my email.

All Grades Vocal Warm up

Explore the vocal oscillators. By clicking on one of the characters and moving up and down, you can make siren noises. Notice as you go high and low, the character gets taller and shorter.

Using the blue character (sine wave oscillator), practice making sirens and then singing them on "Oooo" (as in "boo" not "Oh"). Start with small changes and then slowly get higher and lower.

Kindergarten

Draw a picture using the Kadinsky experiment. Above is mine.
After drawing, hit the play button:

What do different lines sound like?

Different shapes?

Take a screenshot and share your art with me!

1st Grade

Create your own melody using the Melody Maker.

Click in the different blocks to add pitches.

Hit the play button to listen to what you've composed.

Notice you can't stack pitches. That is because melodies are the part of music you can sing and most of us can't sing more than one note at a time.

If you use the button next to the play button, you can make it a round (same melody sung at different times to create layers).

2nd Grade

Create your own ostinato (short repeated pattern) using the Rhythm experiment. Keep the Tempo (steady beat) by patting or tapping with your ostinato.

Try singing a song, reading a book, or saying a poem with your ostinato being your accompaniment (music that "goes with"). A lot of Sandra Boynton's books work really well with ostinatos made with the monsters in my picture above.

Take a screenshot and share your music with me!

3rd Grade

Make your own song using the Song Maker. Create a melody using the squares and a rhythm accompaniment (music that "goes with") using the circles and triangles.

Remember to use notes and rests (sounds and silences).

Your parents can even get a link to your song and share it with me (use the save button).

4th and 5th Grade

Look at the 3rd grade assignment above.

I want you to make your own song too, but try to include Harmony.

Harmony is two or more pitches at the same time.

Compare these two songs. Click on the images to go and then press play to listen.

To create your harmony, write your melody line near the top of the colored squares.
Now place notes under the notes you already wrote.

Not all pitches sound good together, so experiment a bit.

Your parents can even get a link to your song and share it with me (use the save button).

4th Only - experiment with the Spectrogram. Think about the science of sound. What are you seeing?

5th Only - experiment with the Arpeggios. An arpeggio is a chord played one note at a time. Click on the 'C' (outside circle, major) and the 'a' (inside circle, minor). These are the chords we learned on ukulele. Can you create a cool chord progression (series of chords) using these 2 chords and others?
