The *NEW* Blues recorder post.

It looks like some of the links in my old post are dead, so here is a new one.

First off, why the Blues?

The Blues grew out of late 19th Century (post civil war and reconstruction) African American culture in the South. It incorporates elements of work songs, spirituals, and African music.

The Blues has influenced nearly every style of popular music and even influenced many classical composers, check out George Gershwin:

The 12 bar Blues Pattern (in E)

Lyrics

The lyrics in a 12 Bar Blues are typically in an AAB pattern. You say it, say it again and then you say something else.

You can also take the following poem and repeat the first two lines before singing the 3rd & 4th.

The Blues, by Langston Hughes

When the shoe strings break
On both your shoes
And you're in a hurry-
That's the blues.

When you go to buy a candy bar
And you've lost the dime you had-
Slipped through a hole in your pocket somewhere-
That's the blues, too, and bad!

So the first stanza will be sung/played like this:

When the shoe strings break On both your shoes (wait)
When the shoe strings break On both your shoes (wait)
And you're in a hurry-          That's the blues. (wait)

Here is a demonstration:

So, what other poems can you make into the blues?
Do you think you could write your own 12 Bar Blues song?
